definitely not a real life war hero... he was fictional. but they probably used real life war heros to mould his character.

I wonder what sorts of similar characters/ideals the Soviets did create for propaganda purposes. I imagine their ideal type characters might have been more focused on "hard" workers who toiled for the cause of Russia rather than elite soldiers though.

Rambo was not a real life figure.

His heroic exploits were thought to be inspired to those of Colonel Bo Gritz, a real life Green Beret himself. There are a lot of post-war controversies about Bo Gritz. However, Bo actions in Vietnam were legendary. He was involved in numerous black-ops missions deep into North Vietnam. Because these missions were classified, these missions were not publicized. One example of this daring missions was when a group of Green Berets were dropped behind the enemy lines to retrieve/destroy the top-secret software operating the surveillance radar in a U2 spy plane crashing in North Vietnam mountains in 1966. Against all odds, the mission was successful. Bo was said to be instrumental in this operation.
