hey all,
My name is Mike, I am 38 and live in a very small town in southern IL...So I guess you can say that I have a up hill battle collecting as far as location goes!
I kinda felt out of place reading all the other introductions because I don't own anything yet! I just started reading all I could on the web today on it! I am wanting to start collecting western film props ( I loved Dances with Wolves and Open Range ) and maybe some horror things here and there...

I have a wife and a 2yr old daughter that we just adopted from Thailand in Feb...So as you can guess money is rather tight right now! So I hope to keep researching until I come up with some extra cash to buy! I work for a large sporting goods wholesale warehouse and enjoy doing leathercraft in my spare time (if I have any! haha) and I am a member of the IILG(International Internet Leather Guild)... I hope to learn from all of you and maybe come up with some low dollar items or maybe win some somewhere! Thanks for taking me in to your group!

Nice to meet you Mike. Are you more interested in buying replica Western items, buying screen used Western items, or making Western items yourself?
Not a lot of screen used Western stuff out there that I see for sale regularly. Often one will see rubber guns from productions like dances with wolves. Wardrobe is just more scarce in this genre unless one is talking about things worn by John Wayne for example.
What movies do you consider to be "Western?" Are Indian movies without cowboys considered Western by you. If so things from movies like Last of the Mohicans are often for sale. To me western items include things from Dances with Wolves, Walker Texas Ranger, any Clint Eastwood movie, John Wayne movies, Indian movies, and shows like Bonanza. If you care to expand and list the productions you would consider to be Western it might help to come up with ideas as to things you might like. As far as "Western" items all I have are two guns from Walker Texas Ranger used by Chuck Norris and his stunt double.

By the way what horror movies or items are you interested in?
Always wise to research something in depth before you buy something if you decide to that is, and thats what you are doing.

I guess I am just kinda looking at my favorites movies right now...I am very, very new to all this... I was watching a collectors show on TV the other day and thought " I've always wanted to do that"....I am just wanting to see what is available and how to go about getting movie used items...You never know what westerns might come out in the future.. I am wanting to get movie used items mainly.. Thanks for the advice!

I would suggest taking a look at reelclothes.com to see what a reputable dealer charges for wardrobe from a variety of productions. None Western but it gives you an idea and they have lots of sub $100 items. Then browse ebay's movie wardrobe, movie prop, tv prop and tv wardrobe categories to get a feel for things.

By movie used are you more considering wardrobe or things like rubber prop weapons? If you expand your interest to include action movies like Raiders of the lost ark, the Mummy, Mummy Returns and so on there is a lot more to find easy to get an idea on things. Strictly cowboy westerns there are not as many recent productions to get things from.

If you haven't looked around my main site Movieprop.com you might want to consider doing that also. At http://movieprop.com/priceguide.htm you can view a price guide to what some things have sold for in the past for example.

Thanks.. I guess am just in the studying stage right now and going to narrow down as I go... I am not thinking anything really big right now, just things like a pokerchip from "" and a bullet from "". I am about 40 miles from the town that "In the Heat of the Night" was filmed in 1960-somthing. I would like to find things from it also... I even thought things form western tv shows would be cool...I am not much into Sci-fi so that doesnt really interest me. I am just at a start of a long and fun journey...Thanks
